Оплата фактора производства сверх того, что было бы достаточно для его вовлечения в производственный процесс и удержания в нем без дополнительных усилий; например, доход с капитала, имущества, земельного участка, не требующий от владельцев этих факторов предпринимательской деятельности. или доход по государственным облигациям. Иначе говоря, рента это разница между доходом от фактора производства и минимальной суммой, необходимой для обеспечения этим фактором данного объема услуг. В исчислении ренты различаются два подхода, восходящие к идеям В.Парето, с одной стороны, и Д.Рикардо — Д.Милля — А.Маршалла, с другой. Первый поясняется таким примером: если человек зарабатывает 32000 долларов, а на другом (следующем по заработку) месте он был бы согласен получать 30000 долларов, то рента составит 2000 долларов. Во втором случае принимается во внимание, что при заработке в 15000 долларов человек предпочел бы вообще остаться безработным — следовательно, при том же окладе его рента составит 15000 долларов. По вопросу о том, считать ли ренту частью издержек производства, мнения также расходятся. Экономической рентой часто называют также излишек производителя и излишек потребителя (хотя существуют и некоторые отличия этих понятий от ренты.) Не следует смешивать экономико-теоретическое понятие экономической ренты с финансово-хозяйственными понятиями типа страховой ренты, государственной ренты, земельной ренты (арендной платы за землю), ресурсной ренты и др., хотя общие черты и основания у них имеются. Кроме того, широко распространено более широкое юридическое понятие ренты как любого незаработанного, незаслуженного дохода. Отсюда — понятия админстративная рента, рентоориентированное поведение и т.п., которыми деликатно характеризуется такое общественное зло, как коррупция в системе управления, в бюрократии.
